Spray coating of cellulose aerogel particles in a miniaturized spouted bed

Abstract Aim of this work is to apply protective and homogeneous shellac coating layers on the surface hydrophilic open-pore cellulose aerogel particles with low densities ? 0.1 g/cm 3 high specific areas in range ~ 400–450 m 2 /g while keeping aerogels’ microstructure intact during processing. For purpose, an innovative miniaturized spouted bed setup was used. Successful process settings for application enclosed films surfaces without intrusion material into pores were determined. Precise control layer thickness 10–50 µm achieved due variation solution amount agglomeration clogging events occurring Comparison bulk before after proved intactness porous structure. Coating loaded vanillin led controlled release, enhancing release half-life times from 20 1600 min. Overall, a successful strategy organic low-density aerogels developed.
